All About Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the body’s version of a “may have your attention, please!?!” with a megaphone in the years leading up to menopause. Think of it kind of like Mother Nature tapping you on the shoulder and whispering (it’s really more like shouting), “Just so you know, the baby-making party is winding down!” It typically starts in a woman’s 40s (though it can begin in the 30s or even earlier) and lasts anywhere from a few years to over a decade. During this time, hormone levels—especially estrogen and progesterone—start fluctuating like a rollercoaster designed by a very tired and disorganized engineer. The ovaries are still working, but they're definitely not clocking in on a consistent schedule.

The signs of perimenopause can range from mildly annoying to “What is my life?” classics like irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, brain fog, sleep issues, and a metabolism that suddenly prefers storing energy over burning it. Despite all these familiar sounding changes, perimenopause is not the same as menopause. Menopause officially begins after 12 consecutive months without a period—perimenopause is all the “fun” right before that grand finale.

So, to put it in science-meets-real-life terms: perimenopause is the transitional phase where your reproductive system slowly starts dialing down its operations. For healthcare pros, it’s a shifting hormonal profile; for everyone else, it’s often a mix of confusion, overwhelmingly uncomfortable and excessive sweating, and wondering if you’re losing your mind or just losing estrogen. Either way, it’s totally normal—and no, you’re not alone if you’ve cried over a coffee commercial or tried to open a window in the middle of winter because your internal thermostat went rogue or walked into a room and have zero clue what brought you there. Welcome to perimenopause! 🤗

Most common perimenopause symptoms

While every woman is different, there are some signs and symptoms of perimenopause that are more common than others. Not all women will experience these symptoms, but many do.

  • Brain Fog

That moment when you walk into a room and forget why… again. Perimenopause brain fog can feel like your memory is on vacation without you—but you’re definitely not losing your mind! (even if your car keys are still in the fridge. Again.).

  • Hot Flashes & Night Sweats

Suddenly overheating like your internal thermostat is controlled by a toddler with a sense of humor? Yep, those random sauna moments by day and sweaty sheet battles by night are classic annoyances of the perimenopause party.

  • Irregular Periods

Welcome to the wild rollercoaster of “Will it? Won’t it? Oh... now you show up?” Your once-predictable cycle might start showing up late, early, or like an uninvited guest who’s forgotten how long to stay.

  • Mood Swings

Laughing, crying, raging... you know, ALL THE FEELS and maybe all happening within 15 minutes? Back to back to back with no break? Emotional whiplash is real—and no, you’re not “too sensitive.” Your hormones have just decided to CRANK IT UP.

  • Sleep Disruptions

Can’t fall asleep. Can't stay asleep. Can't get back to sleep after a 3am existential spiral? You’re not alone. Perimenopause loves a good late-night overthinking session. 🙄

  • Fatigue

Tired all the time, even if you technically “slept”? The exhaustion hits different when your hormones are in negotiation mode—think of it as your body requesting a permanent coffee IV.

Perimenopause vs. Menopause-- What's the Difference?

Most people have heard of menopause, but perimenopause is an entirely different story. Many women have never heard of perimenopause and only hear that term once they're IN it, usually in their forties or late thirties. Here are some key differences.

  • Timing is Everything

•Perimenopause is the preview, the hormonal opening act—think of it as the "coming soon" trailer to menopause.

•Menopause officially begins when you’ve had 12 consecutive months without a period. No take-backs.

  • Hormones in Motion

•Perimenopause is a hormonal rollercoaster: estrogen and progesterone fluctuate wildly (and sometimes erratically).

•Menopause means the ride has stopped—your hormones settle into their new, post-period normal.

  • Periods Still Partying (Kind Of)

•In perimenopause, periods are irregular, surprising, or comically unpredictable.

•In menopause, they’ve retired completely and sent a postcard saying, “Thanks for the memories.”

  • Symptom Showdown

•Hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and sleep issues tend to start in perimenopause and may continue into menopause, but often lessen over time. (Yes, it’s a slow fade—not an off switch.)

  • Average Age Check

•Perimenopause often begins in your 40s (sometimes late 30s) and can last several years.

•Menopause typically hits around age 51, but the range is wide and perfectly normal.

  • It's Not Over, It's Just Different

    •Perimenopause is the transition.

    •Menopause is the destination.

•Post-menopause is the new chapter—and yes, you can still thrive (and glow) there.
